Dredge Bratpop Playlist
by Clarissa Bird
This playlist came about this break when I recalled one of my favorite bands from high school, Holychild. I realized I had not checked in on them since the debut of their first album “The Shape of Bratpop to Come” from 2015. After the album, the two bandmembers took a two year hiatus before putting out another album and series of singles in 2018 before disbanding in 2020. If you are unfamiliar with the term, ‘bratpop’ refers to music that is a “mix of vibrant feminism, activism and unabashed vocalization of society’s wrongs and rights, the good parts of call-out culture, and confident self-expression” (Wood). Basically, everything you want from your mainstream run of the mill pop music but with an undercutting of social injustices and activism. After giving Holychild’s first album another listen, I sought to curate a playlist of artists and songs that capture this same vibe. I hope you enjoy it!
