About Us

Our Mission

Dredge was founded as an underground Memphis music and arts zine, with the goal to unearth the city’s many hidden musicians, artists, and creatives. We are one of the many projects put on by the Mike Curb Institute at Rhodes College here in Memphis, TN which is run by student members and fellows, to foster community through music in both the Rhodes and greater Memphis community. We appreciate all your support and hope you enjoy our content!

Behind the Name

Our supervisor and mentor Dr. Bass suggested the name ‘dredge’ when we were in the beginning stages of forming Dredge. The word ‘dredge’ refers to a machine that is used to comb through the sediment of a riverbed to bring it to the surface, much like our mission of bringing undiscovered artists to the light. From there, the name stuck.

The Mike Curb Institute for Music

The Mike Curb Institute for Music at Rhodes College was founded in 2006 through a generous gift from the Mike Curb Family Foundation to foster awareness and understanding of the distinct musical traditions of the South and to give students real-world opportunities that enhance what they learn in the classroom.
